ABOUT
Amsterdam-based pianist and composer Erik Verwey creates music where jazz, classical influences and cinematic storytelling meet naturally. After graduating cum laude from the Conservatory of Utrecht and completing his master’s degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, he spent years composing for and performing in award-winning Dutch theatre and cabaret productions (Louise Korthals, Dolf Jansen) , developing a strong narrative voice that still defines his music today.
Driven by a desire to create his own music, Verwey founded the Erik Verwey Trio — a dynamic ensemble known for its lyrical melodies, rhythmic energy and rich cinematic atmosphere. Together with drummer Daniël van Dalen (known from the ensemble Fuse) and bassist Hendrik Müller (Daahoud Salim Quartet), he blends contemporary jazz with influences from classical music, film scores and songs. The trio’s debut album People Flow (2020) received international acclaim, with critics praising its “cinematic” sound and inventive interplay.
Their second album, About a Home (2023), a collaboration with harmonica player Hermine Deurloo was praised in the press as “one of the best jazz albums of the year” and “highly recommended and a milestone” for both musicians. In 2025, the quartet released the live album Live Encounters, recorded at the legendary Studio 2 of the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep in Hilversum. The album captures the chemistry between the musicians in a live setting and received enthusiastic reviews for its warm sound, strong melodies and natural interplay. Jazzenzo wrote that “the soloist and accompanists fit together like a glove,” while other reviewers praised the music for its cinematic quality and lyrical improvisation.
From 2026 onwards, Verwey launches a new musical collaboration: Rosenberg & Verwey, together with master guitarist Mozes Rosenberg — one of the leading voices in contemporary gypsy jazz and heir to the legendary Rosenberg dynasty. Known for his breathtaking virtuosity, deep musicality and unmistakable swing, Mozes has performed on renowned international stages from North Sea Jazz to (Django Reinhardt) festivals worldwide. In Rosenberg & Verwey, the lyrical and cinematic world of Erik Verwey meets the fiery improvisation and rich Sinti-jazz tradition of Mozes Rosenberg, creating a unique musical dialogue full of freedom, intimacy and storytelling.
Other Projects
Erik regularly accompanies French chansonnier Philippe Elan, ocasionally joined by his trio.
Alongside his ensemble projects, Verwey has also built a strong audience with his solo piano work released under the name Verwey. These intimate recordings — balancing simplicity, atmosphere and cinematic melody — have reached millions of streams across platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. Across multiple solo albums, he explores a more minimal and personal side of his music, with compositions that move between neo-classical, reimagined classic pieces and pop/jazz influences.
